SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of San Francisco combined for 39 more kills than the host Gonzaga University Bulldogs as the Lady Dons led by Spokane's Mead High product KeLicia Shorts' 23 kills escaped Spokane with a 3-1 win on Saturday night. USF improved to 9-11 overall, 2-2 in the WCC winning the contest 30-20, 28-30, 30-23, 30-15. With the loss Gonzaga drops to 4-13 overall, 0-4 in the WCC.
San Francisco set a school record for kills in a 4-game match as four players finished in double-digits to give the Lady Dons 86 kills. Shorts led the way with 23 kills on 42 attacks for a .381 attack percentage while Theresa Hart was second on the USF team with 22 kills. The Dons had 20 or more kills in the first three matches as they easily put away the Bulldogs in all three games they won.
In the game two Gonzaga jumped out to a big lead due in large part to the steady play of senior middle blocker Lauren Armas. Armas had 15 kills to lead the Bulldogs offense. She was also a force on the nets finishing with a career-high 10 blocks, nine of them block assists. The Bulldogs were able to stay in the match based on their strong play at the net finishing with 25 team blocks. Becky Jones added nine kills and Lacey Bell eight as GU finished with 47 team kills.
"I think we received some solid play from Lauren (Armas) in the middle tonight," stated Bulldogs head coach Kip Yoshimura. "She was our top offensive and defensive player all night and the stats show that for her. We still need to work on getting more consistent on the offensive attack, but I think we did have some high points in tonight's match that our team can learn from and hopefully use in our upcoming matches."
Stephanie Voelckers had 16 kills and Ashley Bello 13 to round out the USF players with double-digit kills. Brynn Maurer led all players with 25 digs for USF while Jessica Herrera had for GU. Jamie Kartchner controlled the USF attack passing out 73 assists compared to only 36 for GU setter Emilee Gihring.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday night with a non-conference match against Eastern Washington University at Martin Centre. Start time is 7 p.m.
