Severn scores 20th career goal in Zag win

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's soccer won its second straight game, defeating Utah Valley, 2-1, at Luger Field Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (4-4-1) defense held back a second-half flurry of shots after scoring a pair of goals in the first half. UVU (3-4-1) outshot GU, 11-8, including 8-1 in the second half. The Wolverines had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Utah Valley also possessed the ball for 66 percent of the match, but the Zag defense held firm.

Just four minutes into the game, Amelia Severn scored her 20th career goal with an emphatic strike. The junior brought in a ball and drove into the top right of the net to give GU the early lead. Olivia Lester was credited with her fifth career assist and second of the season.

The Bulldogs' Sophia Schlicklin found the back of the net in the 37th minute. Her 11th career goal came off an assist from Samantha Snorsky, who moved into the program's Top 10 at eighth with her 12th career assist.

Less than a minute before halftime, Utah Valley's Sadie Beardall played a difficult cross into the box and got an own goal off a Gonzaga defender.

In the 83rd minute, the Wolverines' Kate Shirts headed a cross on frame, but the Bulldogs' Sydney Head made a clutch save to keep GU ahead.

Head finished with six saves and now ranks second in the Pac-12 Conference with 37 saves this season. Madeline Boucher made three saves in the UVU net.

Severn and Snorsky are tied for second in the conference with six goals this season, and are both third with 15 points. Snorsky's 25 shots are the second-most in the league, while Severn is right behind with 24 shots.

Gonzaga hosts Montana (2-5-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. Six Zags will be honored for Senior Day. The game will be broadcast live on YouTube, with live stats available on GoZags.com.
