GU Volleyball shuts down Southern Utah in season opening sweep

Moraga, Calif.- Gonzaga Volleyball (1-0) opened the season with an emphatic sweep of Southern Utah (0-1), taking the first sets by identical scores of 25-14 before closing the sweep with a 25-18 final set.
The Zags secured the win by holding the Thunderbirds to just a .026 hitting percentage. The GU offense had an incredibly efficient .352 hitting percentage on the attacking end.
Claire Wagstaff led the Zags with eleven kills, while Raechelle Dykstra had eight kills. Wagstaff led the Zags with 4 aces, scoring a total of 17 points in three sets in her debut with the bulldogs. Megan Deveaux had six kills while hitting .625 on the afternoon, and Niki Clausen added another five kills and three and a half blocks. Dani Clewis had 27 assists, two aces and two block assists in her debut, as all three freshman had an impressive introduction to collegiate volleyball.
The Zags hit for a .476 hitting percentage securing the first set with an efficient attack. The first set was capped with 12 kills and five blocks, while GU forced Southern Utah into seven attacking errors in the set. Gonzaga captured the second set by holding Southern Utah to a .000 hitting percentage for the entire frame, using a huge defensive effort to advance the lead in the second set. GU had six aces in the set and nine aces in the total match. The Bulldogs secured the sweep with 13 kills and four blocks to close out the third and final set.
Gonzaga will return to the court for another neutral site contest at Saint Mary's , with the Zags taking on Pacific at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
