PHOENIX, Ariz. – Gonzaga and Arizona State battled in what began a pitchers' duel on Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, but the Sun Devils eventually emerged victorious 3-1 to clinch the series win.
Arizona State (11-4) has now won four straight games, while Gonzaga (2-10) drops their sixth straight and fourth consecutive series to open the 2025 season. Sun Devil pitching allowed just two hits in the middle game of the series, totaling five allowed in the first two games combined.
Gonzaga starter
Miles Gosztola (L, 0-5) had faced just one batter over the minimum entering the bottom of the sixth when Arizona State struck for three runs to chase him. A two-run single and an RBI groundout were how the Sun Devils scored to break up the pitchers' duel.
On the other side, Jack Martinez (W, 2-0) completed seven shutout innings, not allowing a hit until his penultimate batter, an infield single from
Mikey Bell with two outs in the seventh. He would induce a ground ball from
Jace Phelan three pitches later to conclude his quality start.
Finbar O'Brien threw two and two-thirds shutout innings in relief to hold down the ASU offense and allow the Bulldogs to make a late push. Gonzaga loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on two walks and a single from
Hudson Shupe. Bell brought home the lone run with an RBI groundout, but a strikeout cut the rally short with two left in scoring position.
