PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Arizona State offense came alive early Friday evening, scoring five times in the first inning at Phoenix Municipal Stadium to fuel their 11-1 win over Gonzaga in game one of their three-game series.
 
Arizona State (10-4) left-handed starting pitcher Ben Jacobs (W, 1-0) didn't allow a Gonzaga (2-9) baserunner until the sixth inning when Rece Schuerman singled to break up his perfect bid. Jacobs would complete the sixth on the way to a winning decision, striking out six across his shutout performance.
 
After clubbing two home runs in their midweek win over UNLV, leadoff hitter Kien Vu picked up his fifth long ball of the season on Friday with a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth. He would finish 2-for-4 on the night, adding a walk and a double to his line. Nu'u Contrades drew three of the season-high 12 walks allowed by GU pitching, adding a two-run double in the first.
 
Gabe Brabec (L, 0-3) settled down after the long first inning, stringing four scoreless innings before the Sun Devils chased him in the sixth for three more runs. ASU would add three more in the seventh to total their 11 runs and 11 hits.
 
The Zags scored their lone run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single from Ty Yukumoto.
