SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga bats were hot again on Sunday as the Bulldogs completed the sweep over Pacific with a 10-0 win in seven innings. New to the West Coast Conference this season, the mercy rule came into effect when the Zags scored their tenth run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Gonzaga (12-13, 5-1 WCC) has now won ten of their last 11 games and each of their last six. Pacific (10-19, 0-6 WCC) drops their ninth straight game as the Bulldogs came alive with 14 hits on Sunday. Meanwhile, GU starter
Justin Feld (W, 3-3) allowed just the lone Tiger hit in the sixth inning, an infield single en route to the shutout win.
Max Coupe led the Bulldogs with a 3-for-3 afternoon, falling a double shy of the cycle while adding two runs batted in and two runs scored. Four other Zags racked up multi-hit games, including
Hudson Shupe (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 3B),
Mikey Bell (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, HR),
Tommy Eisenstat (2-for-4, RBI, 2B), and
Gage Mestas (2-for-4, 2 RBI, SB).
Feld exited with one out in the seventh, completing six and one thirds of shutout baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Erik Hoffberg entered and completed the frame before the Bulldogs ended the contest early in the next half-inning.
In the weekend series with Pacific, the Bulldogs batted .370 as a team while collecting 37 hits and 31 runs with a perfect 9-for-9 in steals on the base paths.
Josh Hankins collected six of those hits in the series, adding to his monster week where he batted 10-for-16 (.625) with six runs scored, three RBI, three doubles, a home run, and a pair of stolen bases.
For the pitching staff, Gonzaga compiled a 1.59 ERA across the 4-0 week, striking out 29 while walking just 14. Opponents batted .153 off the Bulldogs last week. The GU bullpen did not allow a run or a hit across eight innings pitched, striking out eight.
