Washington State Edges Gonzaga in Ten Innings

The Cougars erased a five-run deficit after the first inning to win in extras

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball scored five runs in the bottom of the first, but Washington State was able to chip away and complete the comeback win in extra innings, defeating the Zags 7-6 on Tuesday at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Gonzaga (12-14) saw its six-game win streak snapped, while Washington State (10-18) broke a four-game skid with the victory.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with five runs in the first, collecting seven hits in the frame. Unfortunately, GU would not score until the tenth while WSU scattered runs across four different innings to knot the game at five in the top of the eighth.

Entering extra innings, Washington State put two runners on before eventually loading the bases. Ricco Longo delivered the blow with a blooper just out of the reach of Josh Hankins to bring home two runs and take a 7-5 lead.

Tommy Eisenstat immediately brought the Bulldogs within one in the bottom of the tenth, blasting his first home run of the season near the right field foul pole. The tying run was put aboard when Ty Yukumoto singled with two outs, but Rylan Haider (W, 1-2) was able to induce a ground ball and end the game.

Gonzaga tallied a season-high 15 hits on Tuesday, led by Yukumoto and Eisenstat who each tallied three. Hudson Shupe went 2-for-5, Luca DiPaolo went 2-for-3 and Sam Stem went 2-for-5 in multi-hit performances for the Zags.
