Zags tied for ninth at 23-over par after two rounds
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Gonzaga men's golfer Brentt Salas is one-over par (143) after the first two rounds of the Oregon State Invitational. Play was suspended in Round 2 for the majority of the field due to darkness, but the Zags were able to complete their second round.
Salas is tied for 17th after the first day at the Trysting Tree Golf Course. He carded a 68 (-3) in Round 2. The sophomore's second round featured seven birdies. He started the round on Hole 11, and went two-under on the course's back-nine holes. Salas was one-under on the course's Par-3 holes, and his 2.88 average on those matched the lowest in the 80-golfer field. He was four-over (75) in the first round.
The Bulldogs are in ninth as a team at 23-over. GU has a 591 team total after 54 holes. The Zags made 29 pars, the third-most in the tournament after two rounds.
Gonzaga's Zach Stocker is in 28th at four-over (146). He had back-to-back rounds of 73 (+2) to start the tournament. He made three birdies in the first round, and four in the second. Matthew Ruel's second round featured six birdies. He is tied for 41st at eight-over (150). He was two-over (73) in Round 2.
Nick Nolan (12-over, 154) and Charlie Magruder (13-over (155) are tied for 64th and 67th. After making 14 pars, Magruder was also two-over (73) in Round 2.
"We got off to a horrible start, making six double bogies in our first six holes," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We eliminated the high numbers the rest of the first round but made a bunch of bogeys and not many birdies. The course was definitely playing harder than any course we've played in recent years. The rough was up and the greens were firm and very fast. In addition, the pins were set in very tough spots for the first round, making it tough to get the ball close and when you did, you needed to be cautious as they were next to ridges where the ball would roll quite a way past the pin if you missed on your speed. It was definitely a fair set up but you needed to be spot on with your ball striking and short game, which we obviously weren't. The second round pin locations were a bit more accessible and we put the ball in much better places, moving up the leaderboard four spots with some groups still to finish tomorrow due to suspension of play because of darkness.
"Great second round by Brentt today, shooting three-under with two double bogeys! Eight birdies in a round is pretty good! Great effort by the rest of the team to hang in their during the up and downs of their rounds. One more round tomorrow to put good rounds together for all five guys."
Hosts Oregon State is in first place as a team. The Beavers are 18-under, but have not completed the second round. OSU's Carson Barry tops the leaderboard at eight-under.
The Bulldogs, Air Force and Seattle all completed Round 2. For the rest of the field, the second round will resume at 9 a.m., Tuesday. The final round will be a shotgun start immediately after the second round is concluded. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
