SANTEE, Calif. - Gonzaga's David Ganz climbed to 13th on the leaderboard at the 2018 West Coast Conference Championships Tuesday. The event is being hosted by the University of San Diego at the Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
Ganz was even-par (72) in the second round, after five birdies and 10 pars. Starting on the 10th hole, he was two-under on the back-nine and two-over on the front. The senior is one-over (145) entering the third and final round.
"David had a very good round going, where he was three-under going into his final hole," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "He had some misfortune on his finishing hole (Par-5, ninth) and ended up even par for the day."
Ben DuBois and Nick Nolan are tied for 24th and 28th. DuBois has a two-round total of 148 (+4), while Nolan is five-over (149). DuBois made 15 pars in the second round, finishing at two-over (72). After a double-bogey on his second hole, he went even-par on his final 16 holes. Nolan was even-par on his last 10 holes, and was seven-over (79) on Day 2.
"Ben posted his second consecutive round of 74," Gray said. "He's playing pretty good and just hasn't had very many putts fall this week."
The Zags are in seventh-place at 11-over (587). GU had a 295 (+7) total Tuesday. The Bulldogs are three strokes out of the top-five entering the final round.
"The wind was up today and it was a chance to pick up some ground," Gray said. "We were a little tense to start the day and played our first four holes six-over. We brought it back for the next 11 holes, but lost some shots on our final few holes. Despite that, we scored pretty close to most of the other teams today. We're really close to putting together a great team round."
Holden Backes carded a 71 (-1) in Round 2, the lowest round of the day for Gonzaga. He made four birdies and 11 pars in the second round. The Yakima, Wash. native, is eight-over (152) in a tie for 36th. Tyler Munetake is nine-over (153) in 40th. He was also even-par on the course's front-nine, finishing six-over (78) in the second round.
"A big bounce back for Holden today, posting our lone round under par in the windy conditions," Gray said. "That was great to see him rebound after yesterday."
Pepperdine has a nine-stroke lead on the field at 13-under (563). The Waves were five-under (283) in the second round. Four Waves' golfers are inside the Top-10. BYU rose to second on the team leaderboard after going 13-under (275) in Round 2. The Cougars were nine-over after the first round, but are four-under (572) after two days.
Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount and BYU's Rhett Rasmussen are tied atop the leaderboard at six-under (138). Rasmussen was six-under (66) in Round 2, while Elmes was five-under (67). Pepperdine's Clay Feagler a stroke behind at five-under (139).
The third and final round begins at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday. Munetake will be the first Zag to tee off. All golfers will start on the first hole in Round 3. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
"It would be great to see our two seniors, David and Ben, finish up their careers with great rounds tomorrow," Gray said.
