"It was a tough weekend against some really good teams," head coach D.J. Gurule said. " I think there are a lot of places we can improve, but I also saw a lot of things that we did well. We know we can compete at this level, and are looking forward to our next matches over spring break."
GU's doubles victory came on No. 3 Doubles with Alex Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta notching a 6-2 win.
Domonique Garley posted the Zags' top singles finish with a win on No. 3 over KU's Janet Koch. The Jayhawk took the first set 6-2, but Garley won the second 7-5, and earned a super-tiebreaker win 10-7. It was Garley's first appearance at No. 3 in the lineup this season, playing her previous matches at No. 4 and No. 5.
In singles, the Jayhawk lineup featured the No. 1 player in the nation in singles in Anastasia Rychagova and the No. 77-ranked player in Despoina Vogasari. KU grabbed the first five singles matches to finish before Garley triumphed in her match on No. 3.
GU will have a 10-day break between matches before traveling to California for a match against Harvard in Northridge, Calif., on March 14, and a match at Fresno State on March 17. Check GoZags.com for available links to live coverage.
