GU's largest win over Idaho State came in its last meeting with a 25-point victory (88-63) on Nov. 18, 2014. Three games have been decided by four points or less with two games being decide by just two points. Idaho State will be the third Big Sky school the Bulldogs have faced this season.
SCOUTING THE BENGALS:
- Idaho State returns four starters and eight letter winners from last season's squad that finished 21-11 overall including an 11-7 mark in Big Sky Conference play. The Bengals advanced to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament in Reno, Nev., last season, but lost to eventual champion Northern Colorado 73-66.
- This season, ISU was picked to finish third in the BSC coaches' poll and fourth in the BSC media poll that was released in October.
- Top returners for Idaho State include redshirt senior forward Grace Kenyon who was selected to the 2018-19 Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team. Last year, Kenyon averaged 12.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks per contest on her way to earning All-Big Sky Second Team honors. Estefania Ors and Saylair Grandon also return for the Bengals backcourt; both Ors and Grandon averaged double figures for Idaho State with 11.0 and 10.9 points per game, respectively.
- Idaho State lost significant contributors to its backcourt in Brooke Blair and Dora Goles. Blair, a redshirt senior in 2017-18, graduated while Goles is recovering from a knee injury suffered in ISU's final game of the 2017-18 season. In addition to Kenyon, the Bengals' front court returns redshirt junior Sai Tapasa who ranked second on the team in rebounds with 5.9 a season ago.
- Through two games this season, the Bengals are 1-1 and average 59.0 points and 37.5 rebounds per game while shooting 37.1 percent from the floor. From long range, ISU averages an even 20 percent shooting and is currently shooting 71.1 percent from the charity stripe. Grandon leads the Bengals in both points (15.5) and rebounds (8.0) per game while Kenyon is a close second with 11.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.
TOWNSEND ON THE RISE:
- Sophomore Jill Townsend has had a strong start to her sophomore campaign. The Okanogan, Wash., native is averaging 12.0 points per game through two contests and 8.0 rebounds; both marks are above her previous career-highs of 11 points and six rebounds. Against Eastern Washington, Townsend came off the bench to post a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. She's the first Zag to come off the bench and post a double-double since teammate Zykera Rice in 2016. Rice came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds in GU's 102-38 win over UC Irvine on Nov. 13, 2016.
DEFENSIVE PROWESS:
The Bulldogs are setting the defensive standard early. The Zags lead the West Coast Conference and rank 27th in the nation in steals with 28, and the Bulldogs rank second in the conference in field goal percentage defense at 32.5. GU also ranks second in the WCC in turnovers forced with 22.5 per contest. Both Katie Campbell and Chandler Smith lead the squad and share the WCC lead with seven steals each, good for 3.5 per contest. Defense was key in Gonzaga's recent 63-51 road win at Eastern Washington as the Zags forced 24 turnovers including three in the final 3:40 to seal the win.
