Zags Continue Play at Aggie Invitational

DAVIS, Calif.--The Gonzaga men's tennis team continued play at the season-opening Aggie Invitational Saturday, moving into consolation action at Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, Calif.
Five Bulldogs entered the day in competition for main bracket finals, and all five fell into consolation play. Those matches were tightly contested, however, as three went into third sets and four saw at least one set tiebreak or extra game.
In the top bracket, junior Ruadhan O'Sullivan played two tiebreaks against Portland's Pierre Garcia, but the Pilot won the final frame to clinch a match victory. Sophomore Vincent Rettke also played two set tiebreaks, falling to Santa Clara's Connor Garnett 7-6 (6) in the third to drop into consolation play. Also, Sam Feit pushed California's Paul Barretto but fell 7-6 (3) in the first set before dropping the second. Both O'Sullivan and Rettke, however, salvaged consolation wins later in the day.
Also going three sets, freshman Matthew Perkins forced UC Davis' Mitchell Iwahiro to an elongated match before dropping out of the B Singles main flight. In B Consolation play, both Kyle Everly and Emilio Moreno claimed victories.
In the C Singles round robin flight, sophomore Simon Homedes Dualde split a pair of matches, beating Santa Clara's Max Heerinckx in the afternoon.
Two Zag doubles pairs picked up wins Saturday as well. Moreno teamed with Bryan Husin for a win against a Portland duo, and the team of O'Sullivan and Feit took down a squad from California.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the first tournament of the season on Sunday, Oct. 1, again at Marya Welch Tennis Center. Doubles play will begin at 8:30 a.m.
