The Bulldogs Advanced to the Semifinals in Doubles and Singles Play
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team opened play in the Gonzaga Fall Invitational Friday morning. After collecting wins in the initial Round of 16 and quarterfinals, the Zags will continue competition in the semifinals tomorrow.
Beginning the day with doubles matches, two Gonzaga duos across two flights received byes in the Round of 16 and immediately played in the quarterfinals. James Hutchinson and Tristan Hernandez defeated their Portland opponents in a decisive 6-1 match. Noah Pawirodirjo and Diego Herrera fell in their match against Boise State's Braydon Tallakson and Eyad Reda Ezzat Mohamed Sherif, 2-6. Tom Dunlop and Michael Mitchell did not receive a bye and fell in their Round of 16 match against their Portland State opponents, 2-6.
The Invitational spread its singles matches across three flights: Red, Blue, and White. In the Red flight, Diego Herrera defeated his Round of 16 and quarterfinal opponents in straight sets, moving him into the semifinals tomorrow. Tom Dunlop fell in his Round of 16 match against Oregon's Kohshi Ishibashi in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0).
In Blue singles, James Hutchinson gleefully won his Round of 16 match against Whitworth's Matthew Morrison in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Hutchinson was bested by his Portland opponent in his quarterfinal match, 2-6, 1-6.
Most Zag players participated in the White flight, with Michael Mitchell winning his Round of 16 match and advancing to the semifinals after his quarterfinal opponent, Oumar Diallo (MSU), defaulted due to disqualification. Noah Pawirodirjo beat both of his opponents and will move forward in the flight. Tristan Hernandez fought hard in his match against Portland State but ultimately fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.
The Gonzaga Fall Invitational will continue through Sunday at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Washington. Participating teams include Boise State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Montana State - Bozeman, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, and Whitworth.
