The Zags Will Close Out Play Tomorrow
DENVER, Colo. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team finished the second day of the 2026 Colorado Cup Saturday evening after a full day of matches against the Air Force Academy. The Bulldogs finished the day's matches with a 1-2 record in doubles and a 5-2 record in singles.
Beginning with doubles play, Jay Fairclough and Nicholas Reeves earned a win for the Zags in their competition against Tyler Leaird and Caden Lee, 6-3. Tristan Hernandez and Diego Herrera dropped in their match against Muyang Yi and Sebastian Mazur, 3-6. Tom Dunlop and James Hutchinson were also unable to pick up the win in their doubles match against Daniel Tonkal and Jaden Woller-Li and ultimately fell, 2-6.
In singles matches, the Bulldogs picked up five wins across the day. Nicholas Reeves defeated his opponent, Alec Fritzinger, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Michael Mitchell did the same against Air Force's Kai Stolaruk, 7-5, 6-2. Tom Dunlop took the win in his first set against Tyler Leaird, 6-4, and was able to clinch the second set, and the match, in a tiebreak, 7-6(5). Jay Fairclough played two sets in his match against Muyang Yi and was able to claim both after each went to a tiebreak, 7-6(7) and 7-6(5), respectively. Tristan Hernandez took the first set of his match against Caden Lee, 7-5, before falling in the second, 4-6. Hernandez came back to dominantly win the third set, 6-2. Diego Herrera won his first set against Sebastian Mazur, 7-6(4), but dropped the second and third, 2-6 and 4-6, allowing Mazur to take the win. James Hutchinson fell in straight sets to his Air Force opponent, Daniel Tonkal, 6-4, 6-3, leading Tonkal to take the victory.
Play in the Cup will continue through tomorrow at the Denver Tennis Park. The Bulldogs will finish up competition against Montana on Sunday morning.
