The Bulldogs Picked Up Wins in Singles and Doubles Play During Second Day of Competition
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team continued hosting and playing in the Gonzaga Fall Invitational on Saturday. After a day of singles and doubles matches, the Zags will advance to the competition's final rounds, which will be played tomorrow.
In doubles play, Tom Dunlop and Michael Mitchell played Idaho's Xavier Martin and Erik Vladimirov in their quarterfinal match, earning a 6-1 win to advance. Dunlop and Mitchell's semifinal match, played later in the day, was against Ethan Masselis and Elijah Calaquian (MSU). In a close competition, the Zags got the win after a tiebreak, 7-6(3), and will play in their flight's final match tomorrow. James Hutchinson and Tristan Hernandez also played a semifinal match but fell to Montana State's David Ismanescu and Oumar Diallo, 2-6.
Continuing the Invitational's three-flight singles format (Red, Blue, and White) from yesterday, Diego Herrera was the only Zag to play a match in the Red bracket. Paired against Cameron Burton (UO) in a semifinal match, Herrera fell in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6. No Gonzaga players competed in the Blue flight today.
In the White singles flight, two semifinal matches were played, one by Michael Mitchell and the other by Noah Pawirodirjo. Mitchell defeated his Montana State opponent in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, and will represent the Zags in the flight's final round tomorrow. Pawirodirjo played Declan Galligan (UO) in his match but ultimately fell in a back-and-forth three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.
In the consolation brackets, duo Noah Pawirodirjo and Diego Herrera picked up a win against their Portland State opponents, 6-2. Tristan Hernandez also earned a win in his singles match against Idaho in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
The Gonzaga Fall Invitational will continue through tomorrow at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Washington. Participating teams include Boise State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Montana State - Bozeman, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, and Whitworth.
