Duck Invitational Day One Results
EUGENE, Ore.--The Gonzaga University men's tennis team began their final tournament of the fall, the Duck Invitational, Friday, and Simon Homedes Dualde reached the semifinal of the Yellow Singles bracket in Eugene, Oregon.
The freshman picked up a pair of singles wins to reach the semifinal. In the first round, he rebounded from a tough tiebreak loss in the first set to down West Coast Conference foe Andrew Newell. Newell grabbed the early match advantage with a 5-7 tiebreak victory in the first set, but Homedes Dualde won the next two frames 6-3 and 6-2 to advance. In the second round, he downed Nevada's Mile Cilic in another three-setter, winning 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (2). He'll face another member of the WolfPack, Sandro Lena, in the semifinals Saturday.
Also in the Yellow Singles flight, Emilio Moreno reached the second round, brushing past Portland State's Russell Risenhoover in the first. Lena beat the Gonzaga sophomore by a break in both sets 6-4, 6-4 to advance. Kyle Everly, meanwhile, lost to Nevada's Jonathan Aremon 6-4, 6-0 in the first round.
Two Bulldogs reached the second round of the top flight at the Duck Invitational, the Green Singles flight. Ruadhan O'Sullivan downed Portland's Pierre Garcia in straight 6-2 sets, and Vincent Rettke beat Nevada's Julien Evrard in two sets as well. Both fell in the second round, however, ending their main bracket runs.
Sam Feit lost to host school Oregon's Cormac Clissold in the first.
In doubles play, the two Zag duos that played Friday were eliminated. In the first round, O'Sullivan and Moreno lost to Garcia and Carlos Donat of Portland, while Feit and Homedes Dualde lost to Kostya Nesterenko and Robert Margitfalvi of Nevada. Both pairs will begin consolation play Saturday.
There is one GU doubles pair still in the main bracket as Rettke and Everly had a bye directly to the second round. They'll take on the Pilots' Fisher and Goutham Sundaram on Saturday, November 12. That match will take place at 9:00 a.m., opening the second day of the Duck Invitational.
