SEATTLE -- Gonzaga's men's soccer team put up a valiant effort against 10th-ranked Washington, but an early second-half goal by the Huskies was the difference in a 1-0 loss in the season opener in Seattle, Wash.
The Zags managed to keep the pressure on and played well on the defensive end, outshooting the Huskies 10-8 overall and 5-2 in shots on goal. GU kept UW without a shot on goal in the first half, and put three of their own on frame in the opening half.
"I thought we played well enough to beat them," head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "The guys stepped up and played extremely well. I thought Colton [Cavey] had his best game, and to me he was the man of the match. And Ben White and Conner Bevans each had outstanding games. The only time UW really got behind us was for their goal early in the second half. The whole team was disappointed in the loss, but there was some really good moments that we can carry forward."
Early in the second half, the Huskies' Beau Blachand got free and headed home a cross from Josh Heard in what turned about to be the eventual game winner in the 47th minute.
Senior Conner Bevans played all 90 minutes and took two shots, one on goal. Freshman Jake Kempf got his first career start and put two shots on goal for the Zags.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Lowrimore got the start for Gonzaga and had one save.
Gonzaga will be back on the field on Sunday at Seattle University in a 3 p.m. match at the Redhawks' Championship Field in Seattle, Wash. Last season, Gonzaga took a 1-0 loss to SU. The match can be seen live on www.WACsports.com/live.
