SEATTLE -- Gonzaga's men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory on the road at Seattle University on Sunday at Championship Field in Seattle, Wash.
Junior midfielder Jakob Granlund led the charge offensively for the Zags, scoring the lone goal of the match. He had five shots, including three on goal, of Gonzaga's 10 total shots (5 SOG).
"The guys just came to play, it was a great team effort again," head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "Chris [Lowrimore] had a huge save in the second half, and the defense just held, held, held. Our midfielders outplayed their midfielders, and our defense stayed between the goal and the ball. We didn't let them penetrate much and it forced them to take shots from distance. The outstanding players for me were Jakob [Granlund], Sam [Olson] and Colton {Cavey], and then our whole backline of Austin [Giftopoulus], Connor [Bevans], Ben [White] and Jalen [Crisler] and Chris [Lowrimore] in net."
In the 52nd minute, freshman Jake Kempf found Granlund with a long ball, who deposited it in the back left corner of the net. The goal, Granlund's sixth of his career, turned out to be the only score of the game for either squad.
On defense, senior goalkeeper Chris Lowrimore was perfect in net, turning away all four shots on goal from Seattle U, including one from point-blank range in the second half to preserve the lead. The Redhawks managed 15 total shots and had five corners, but the Gonzaga defense was up to the task each time.
The win avenged a 1-0 loss to the Redhawks in Seattle last season, and gave GU five wins in the last six meetings between the teams.
Gonzaga's record moves to 1-1 heading into its home opener next weekend against Cal Poly on Thursday at 5 p.m. That match will start a string of six straight at home for the Zags over the course of three weeks. They follow up the Cal Poly match with Northwestern on Saturday at Luger Field at 4 p.m. Games will be streamed live on TheW.tv with live stats on www.GoZags.com.
