WACO, Texas - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team finished up its last day at the University of Baylor HEB Intercollegiate with victories in two of their three matches Sunday.
"The talent at the tournament was very good," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "I wanted us to come down and play a lot of matches; and that is exactly what we did. Alvaro, Nick and Vicente all had a good weekend for us."
Although his run in the Gold Draw came to an end Saturday, junior Alvaro Nazal had a critical match Sunday against the 60th-ranked player in the nation, Mate Zsiga (Baylor). Nazal, the 99th-ranked player, would put on a show to drop Zsiga 6-4, 6-3; on his home courts.
Nick Kamisar picked up his first match as a Bulldog with a dominating performance over Sam Grey (University of Oklahoma). Kamisar took the match 6-0, 6-1.
Vicente Varas won three matches to earn himself a bid into the finals of the Green Draw where he was slated to face Arturo Pinazo (Laredo Community College). Unfortunately Varas' run would end with a 6-1, 6-2; defeat.
"This was a good opening weekend," MacDonald said. "We knew we wanted to come down and play some top competition. We picked up a number of quality wins and we hope to keep it going through the fall."
The Bulldogs have a quick turn around with the full squad traveling to Eastern Washington University Friday for the EWU Fall Classic.
