Men's Tennis Falls In Tough Battle With UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - In the first of three matches over the weekend, Gonzaga University men's tennis fell to UC Irvine 4-3 at the Anteater Tennis Stadium Friday. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and two singles matches in a tough battle against the Anteaters.
The defeat puts Gonzaga at 6-5 in the spring.
The Bulldogs highlights came in the doubles matches.
The No. 1 duo of Olivier Jamin and Vladimir Mijatovic trailed Ryan Cheung and Jonathan Hammel for a large part of its match. Down 5-7 with the score 0-30, the Zags comeback began. Jamin and Mijatovic battled to top UC Irvine 9-7 after winning four straight points.
Alvaro Nazal and Pablo Mosquera Pérez also battled to win a 9-8 contest over Justin Agbayani and Caryl Hernandez.
Gonzaga competed in each singles match but came up just short in several.
Winning in singles was No. 1 Nazal over Cheung 5-7, 6-2, 6-2; and Mijatovic over Shuhei Shibahara 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Freshmen Hayden Smith and Vicente Varas all went to three sets in their match but came up winless. Smith went down 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to Hammel and Varas fell 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 to Hernandez.
Gonzaga has a short turnaround before its next match as the squad faces West Coast Conference member University of San Diego Friday at 3 p.m.
