MORAGA, Calif. - All of Gonzaga University men's tennis players have been eliminated from the USTA ITA Northwest Regional main draws Saturday after junior Vladimir Mijatovic was ousted in the round of 32 at the Korth Tennis Complex.
Mijatovic went 1-1 on the weekend after winning in the round of 64 Friday. He was denied the round of 16 by second seed Campbell Johnson (Cal) 6-3, 6-3.
The remaining five Zags, who were eliminated from singles action Friday, were slated to compete in consolation matches but three of those matches were automatically awarded to the GU player because the opponent withdrew.
Joey Brandt, Vicente Varas and Hayden Smith took their match by withdrawal.
Nick Kamisar and Jack Schoebel did get to compete. Kamisar was victorious over Sam Bloore (Saint Mary's College) 6-3, 6-1. Schoebel would fall 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (5) to Jeff Hawke (University of Washington).
Saturday also marked the start of the doubles draw where each of the Zags duos was eliminated.
In the round of 64, Smith and Schoebel battled with Daniel Alameh and Denis Stolarov (University of the Pacific) but would come up shy 8-4. Varas and Mijatovic paired up to narrow fall to James Markiewics and Mathias Olsen (Saint Mary's) 8-7 (7). Brandt and Kamisar were matched up against Sam Bloore and Thomas Hunt (Saint Mary's) and were defeated 8-3.
The USTA ITA Northwest Regionals continue Sunday. Many of the Gonzaga competitors will continue to see consolation action.
