CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team took home three singles championships as the Eastern Washington University Fall Classic concluded Sunday.
Freshman Alvaro Nazal and sophomore Pablo Mosquera Pérez claimed the two Singles Flight main draw titles while freshman Olivier Jamin clinched one of the back draw titles.
Nazal defeated two veterans and teammates to win the Singles Flight A title. He started the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over junior Levin Guillermo and in the championship match he defeated senior Scott Sullivan 6-1, 6-1. Sullivan reached the final round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sho Higuchi of the University of Oregon.
One day after upsetting the top seed of the Singles Flight B bracket to reach the finals, Mosquera Pérez topped Andreas Luczak out of the University of Montana 6-2, 6-4 to claim the title.
Jamin played two tough matches to win the Singles Flight A consolation title. Starting with Montana's Carl Kuschke in the semifinals, Jamin won the first set 7-5 but Kuschke claimed the second 6-2 and Jamin capitalized to win the deciding set 1-0 (5). Later in the day, Jamin faced Oregon's Doug Mayeda in another three-set match. After losing the first set 6-4, Jamin rebounded and won the next two 6-4, 1-0 (3) to win the title.
Senior Jake Davis and sophomore Muzeen Ismath were also in action Sunday. The two Bulldogs had to face each other to determine who will represent Gonzaga in the Singles Flight B consolation championship match later in the day. Ismath won the first set 6-3 but it was the veteran Davis who won the next two 6-1, 1-0 (9) to advance. Davis came up short in the championship match, falling 6-1, 6-0 to Daniel Coelho of West Coast Conference foe University of Portland.
The Bulldogs will travel to Seattle Oct. 7-9 to participate in the always-tough Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals.
