Volleyball Opens Second Weekend With A Flurry

BOILING SPRINGS, NC - Gonzaga University's volleyball team opened with a red-hot hitting performance as the Bulldogs rolled past Florida International University in three games to open the Over the Mountain Invitational. GU connected for a .312 team hitting percentage as they won 30-22, 30-21, 30-26.
Sophomore Becky Jones led three Gonzaga players into double-digit kills as she finished with 14 kills on 26 swings and a .346 attack percentage. Lacey Bell followed with 12 kills and freshman Michelle Boevers hit double-digits for the third straight match collecting 10.
Gonzaga opened the match with a .567 attack percentage in game one as they had 20 kills on 30 attacks with only three attack errors. Heather Dunn passed out a match-high 38 assists as Gonzaga combined for 45 total kills on 39 assists.
Florida International kept pace during the opening game as the Golden Panthers combined for 17 kills on 34 attacks for a .324 clip. Gonzaga's front row defense stepped up in the final two games as they picked up 18 of 22 blocks in down the stretch. Paige Dillingham and Briawna Mueller each finished with six blocks for the Bulldogs.
FIU's offense was led by Anna Dmowksa with 12 kills while Anita Szymanska added 11. Szymanska also had FIU's lone service ace compared to eight dropped in by the Bulldogs, Dunn and Alecia Douglas each serving three.
Gonzaga improves to 2-2 on the season and will play Morehead State University in the afternoon. Florida International dropped to 2-2.
