Big Block Effort Leads LMU Over Volleyball

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Loyola Marymount Lions (15-9, 6-5 WCC) combined for a .285 team attack percentage on Friday night as they picked up a 3-0 win over the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (4-22, 0-12 WCC) in West Coast Conference volleyball action. LMU won the match 30-17, 30-26 and 30-18 to sweep the season series from the Bulldogs.
Kelli Nerison dominated play at the net for the Lions as she finished with a match-high 14 kills and 9 blocks, four of them solos. Heather Hughes and Jania Motton also came up big on offense with 12 kills each, Motton finished with no errors in 26 attack attempts. LMU also controlled play at the net with a 26-6 block advantage, Dina Debernardi added seven of the 26 blocks including two solos.
The Bulldogs hung tough early in game finishing with just five fewer kills than LMU for the match. Gonzaga was also in contention in game two as the combined for 15 kills and a .152 team attack percentage. Lauren Armas and Becky Jones kept the Bulldogs in the match finishing with nine kills each. Gonzaga just did not have enough offensive answers in the final game falling 30-18.
"We played really well in game two despite the loss," mentioned GU head coach Kip Yoshimura. "I was a little disappointed that we could not carry that consistency throughout the entire match. Our team has shown improvement all season long but we need to learn how to carry that great effort through an entire match."
The Bulldogs will get one more shot to knock off a WCC opponent at home tomorrow night when the Bulldogs host Pepperdine University. Gonzaga will hold its senior night ceremonies prior to the match. Start time is 7 p.m.
