SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gonzaga University won its second straight unofficial West Coast Conference Men's Rowing Championship Friday on Lake Natoma, the varsity eight taking nearly a 7-second victory.
The WCC does not sponsor men's crew, but six of the varsity crews rowed Friday prior to the WCC Women's Rowing Championship.
The Bulldog varsity covered the 2,000 meter course in 5:51.6 to beat the University of San Diego by a boat length of open water, the Toreros finishing in 5:58.18. Santa Clara University was third in 5:59.63.
"We led wire-to-wire," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "We moved out slowly over the first 500 meters, and opened the lead over the final 1,000 meters."
The men's varsity eight consisted of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Kiely, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch. That line-up has been successful over the past few weeks with a first-place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic Cal Cup Regatta and head-to-head wins over the University of San Diego, Santa Clara University, Sacramento State University and Western Washington University.
The Gonzaga junior varsity finished second in 6:15.1 behind Santa Clara University in 6:10.9. The Bulldogs led for the first 500 meters, SCU gained the lead at about 600 meters and then "sat on it the rest of the way," according to Gehn.
The Bulldogs will remain in Sacramento to compete in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships Saturday and Sunday on Lake Natoma.
