SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team (11-8, 3-4 WCC) is enjoying the benefits of a winning season with the selection of head coach Shannon Stiles as West Coast Conference Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs placed players on WCC teams, including one first team nomination.
Stiles guided her team from an 0-15-2 (0-7 WCC) record in 2001, 6-13 (0-7 WCC) record in 2002 to the program best 11-8 record, marking the first WCC victories since 1999 and a program-best conference fifth-place finish. Stiles broke the record book during the 2003 season, creating new records with 11 team wins, three WCC wins, a five-game win streak, three WCC shutouts and a three-game WCC win streak.
Junior forward Annie Hawkins was named first team All-WCC, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Haugen was named second team while junior midfielder Sarah Hawkins and freshman defender Beth Drollinger received honorable mention honors.
Annie Hawkins led the WCC with 13 goals, tied for first in the Gonzaga single season record books with Sara Streufert. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native joins Streufert also as the only other woman to score three goals in one game and remains the second woman in program history to receive first team honors for the Bulldogs.
Haugen recorded five shutouts on the season with three WCC shutouts, including a 1-0 victory over then-ranked #11 Pepperdine University. For her efforts, Haugen was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week. The Littleton, Colo., native also became the leader with a 1.48 goals against average for a single season and moved up to take third with 255 career saves. Haugen marks the fifth second-team honor for the Bulldogs.
Sarah Hawkins received honorable mention honors for the first time in her career after posting five goals and three assists with 13 points for the season. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native was first recognized as the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Oct. 27 by scoring two goals in the 4-0 defeat over LMU and her assist in the 1-0 shutout over Pepperdine. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native was also named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week with teammate Haugen and recognized on the Soccer America Team of the Week for her efforts.
Drollinger made her mark on Gonzaga soccer as she started all 19 games for the Bulldogs as a freshman defender. The Yakima, Wash., native scored one goal and one assist for Gonzaga as one of only two freshman to score a goal for the Bulldogs. Drollinger also held a 75 percent shot on goal percentage with six of her eight shots on target. As a defender, Drollinger helped establish the best season record, both overall and WCC, in program history.
Rounding out the individual conference awards, Santa Clara University's Leslie Osborne received Player of the Year, University of Portland's Imani Dorsey received Defender of the Year and Santa Clara's Lauren Zealear was named Freshman of the Year.
