SPOKANE, Wash. - Santa Clara University was picked to win its fifth West Coast Conference women's soccer title in a pre-season coaches poll released by the conference office. The Broncos which advanced to the NCAA Final Four last season received seven of the eight first place votes.
Gonzaga University was picked to finish seventh in the coaches poll after completing their most successful West Coast Conference season ever in 1999. The Bulldogs received 10 votes and tied the University of San Francisco for seventh place. Gonzaga returns eleven players from last seasons team including first team All-WCC selection Sara Streufert. The team looks to get significant contributions from seniors Katie Carpenter, Kellie Leaf and Gina Legaz, as well as sophomore standout Claire Whitfield.
The West Coast Conference pre-season women's soccer poll is voted on by the eight head coaches at the WCC institutions. This marked the first season that a school could not rank itself in the pre-season poll. Listed below are the complete pre-season poll results with first place votes in parenthesis. Gonzaga opens its season on August 25 with a road game at Montana.
