The Zags are going out on a high note for Coach Pat Tyson in his 19th and final season as Gonzaga Head Coach before retiring, powering to a win with all five runners finishing in the top 15 places. The Zags were led by a fourth place finish by Dylan Weniger, who ran a career best time of 23:35.0. Dylan Rowell won Pac-12 Freshman of the Year after a sixth place finish with a time of 23:38.7.Â
Logan Schwartz was also named a First Team All Pac-12 honoree alongside his two teammates after running a time of 23:39.9. Logan Law and Ryan Mitchell were named to the Second Team All-Conference after finishes with respective times of 23:39.9 and 23:45.0. Mitchell had an incredible effort in the final 2k to pass several Utah State runners to move into the top 15 to secure the win for GU.
The Zags had just a 24 second split between their five scoring runners. GU was the only team with three runners to finish in the top ten. The Bulldogs had four runners at the front of the peloton for the majority of the race as the Zags worked well to run a strategic race. Gonzaga had just 39 points in the final scoring, finishing over 15 points ahead of second place Utah State and third place Washington State.
"This feeling is just unbelievable to be honest with you. This is a dream come true for the guys" coach Tyson said when describing the win immediately after the final results were confirmed.
The GU women finished in fifth, led by a First Team All Pac-12 finish for freshman Audrey Orme, who ran the 6k in 20:22.9 for a seventh place overall finish. Sloan Dickson was also named to the Second Team All Pac-12 after a strong freshman season, finishing ninth overall with a time of 20:23.5.
Josh Augustine was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Augustine has a 3.88 GPA through his season year at Gonzaga, where he will graduate as the first cohort in the biomedical Engineering program. Augustine has worked with Gonzaga professors to research how to improve wheelchair designs.
