PORTLAND, Ore. – After plating nine runs in the bottom of the seventh, Portland baseball evened the series with a 12-5 win over Gonzaga on Friday at Joe Etzel Field.
Gonzaga (25-25, 15-8 WCC) took a 4-0 lead over Portland (22-28, 13-10 WCC) after the top of the third, scoring once in the second before a three-run third put the Bulldogs up four.
The Pilots responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third, adding another in the sixth to make it 4-3 Gonzaga. GU got one right back in the seventh with an RBI single from
Mikey Bell, but the wheels fell off in the next half-inning.
Portland scored nine runs on six hits, taking advantage of two walks and two hit batters to flip the game and break it open.
Gonzaga tallied 11 hits in game two, led by three from
Ty Yukumoto. Bell continued to drive up his batting average with a 2-for-5, two RBI, one run performance.
Max Coupe added a 2-for-4 effort in the loss.
Despite the no decision,
Miles Gosztola struck out eight across five and a third innings, allowing just three runs on four hits. Only one of Gosztola's four walks came around to score.
UP NEXT
Gonzaga will look to take the series finale on Saturday, as they find themselves in the same position as Friday. A win or a Saint Mary's loss would secure the No. 2 seed for the Bulldogs in the West Coast Conference Tournament next week.
