Five-Run Inning Propels No. 3 Oregon State to 8-3 Win Over Gonzaga

The Bulldogs led 3-2 but a two-out rally from the Beavers flipped the lead to OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Gonzaga took a 3-0 lead early over No. 3 Oregon State, but the pesky Beavers responded with eight unanswered runs to win 8-3 and earn the two-game sweep on Tuesday at Goss Stadium.

Gonzaga (18-19) plated two runs in the first inning off Oregon State (32-7) starter Max Fraser (ND) as three straight hits made it 2-0. Ty Yukumoto, who singled to lead off the game, brought home the Bulldogs' third run with a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

The Beavers responded with two in the next half-inning off Karsten Sweum (ND), who completed five innings in his first collegiate start while allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out four.

In the home half of the sixth, Michael Cunneely (L, 1-2) nearly escaped a bases-loaded jam when a two-out pop fly landed in a pocket of the GU outfield for a single, allowing two runners to score to give OSU a 3-2 lead. Gavin Turley took advantage of the Gonzaga mishap, clubbing his 14th home run of the season to blow the game open 7-3.

An eighth run crossed the plate for Oregon State in the seventh inning and the Beaver bullpen continued to shut down the Zag offense, combining for 5.1 innings of one-hit, zero-run baseball while striking out four. Gonzaga put one runner in scoring position after the fifth inning.

After a 0-for-5 night on Monday, Mikey Bell was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to lead GU on Tuesday, while Yukumoto added a 2-for-4, RBI, R performance.
