Men’s Tennis Beats UC San Diego, 4-2

Zags (7-5) face SDSU on Wednesday

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Gonzaga men's tennis overpowered UC San Diego, 4-2 on Sunday at Northview Tennis Courts.

The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point with wins by Jay Fairclough/Nicholas Reeves (6-1) and Tom Dunlop/Gus Krauel (6-3). When the dual moved to singles, Giovanni Branchetti/Kai-Luca Ampaw were knotted 5-5 with a pair of Tritons.

In singles, Reeves secured another point for the Zags with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court three. UCSD tied the overall match 2-2 by defeating Dunlop (6-3, 6-0) and Branchetti (7-6 (5), 6-3). However, Ampaw got the Bulldogs back on track — prevailing 7-5, 6-4.

On court six, Oscar Rashed withstood a dropped first set to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 and clinch the overall match for Gonzaga. When the dual ended, Fairclough led 5-1 in the third frame after falling in the first set and overcoming a tiebreaker in the second.

MATCH NOTES
- Gonzaga men's tennis is 7-5 this spring season, with other wins against Eastern Washington (twice), Seattle (twice), Montana State, and No. 69 Montana.
- The Zags have won three of their past four matches.
- GU is now 2-3 on the road, with a 4-0 sweep over Seattle (Jan. 25).
- The Bulldogs are 5-2 at home, with 4-3 defeats to Nevada (Feb. 2) and Idaho (March 2).
- UCSD is now 4-9 this season and on a five-dual losing streak.
- Sunday's match was the fourth in three days for the Tritons, who fell to No. 7 San Diego, Texas Tech, and Tulane in the Ed Collins Classic over the weekend.
