Gonzaga Completes Sweep Over Washington

Justin Feld threw seven strong innings to earn the winning decision as GU prevailed 9-6

SEATTLE, Wash. –  Gonzaga baseball completed its first sweep of the season with a 9-6 win over Washington on Sunday at Husky Ballpark. The Zags scored five in the first two innings to take and maintain the lead while Justin Feld (W, 1-3) kept the Husky bats quiet through seven frames.

Gonzaga (5-12) was off and running early on Sunday, scoring three in the top of the first on two hits and taking advantage of a Washington (8-12) error. The Bulldogs would add two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead thanks to an RBI double from Gage Mestas and a sacrifice fly from Hudson Shupe.

The Huskies got on the board in the third after plating two against Feld, but the junior righty would lock in for the next four frames, allowing just one more run in the fifth before completing his seven-inning effort, striking out five.

Heading into the ninth, Gonzaga knew they needed insurance after Washington put together rallies in each of the first two games before falling short by a run. Ty Yukumoto doubled, Mestas singled, and Shupe brought home the first run with his third hit and second RBI of the afternoon. Tommy Eisenstat followed with a double that cleared the bases and gave the Bulldogs a 9-3 lead.

Erik Hoffberg (S, 2) returned to the mound after a 1-2-3 eighth and was met with another UW rally. Three straight hits and a walk opened the inning for the Huskies before a sacrifice fly and another single made it 9-6. However, Hoffberg would punch the next two batters out, each on full counts to secure the win and series sweep.

Shupe led all offense with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI on Sunday, finishing his weekend 7-for-13 with five RBI, five runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base. Eisenstat finished 2-for-4 on Sunday with three RBI, a run scored, and a sacrifice bunt that led to GU's lone run in the fifth.
