Baseball Falls to UC Davis 5-1 in Series Finale

DAVIS, Calif. – For the second consecutive day, UC Davis pitching held the Gonzaga offense to just one run to secure the series win on Sunday at Dobbins Stadium. The Aggies used a pair of two-run innings to fuel the 5-1 win in the finale.

UC Davis (2-1) starter Tyler Wood (W, 1-0) was efficient in his start, pitching five and one-third innings on just 49 pitches, scattering three hits and one run while striking out two. Hudson Shupe was the only Bulldog to tag Wood, clubbing the first Gonzaga (1-2) home run of the season in the fourth inning.

The Aggies were first to score, plating two runs in the bottom of the third after drawing three straight walks from GU starter Justin Feld (L, 0-1). After Shupe's solo shot in the fourth, UC Davis responded with a two-run single from Ryan Lee in the bottom half of the frame to extend their lead to 4-1.

Reliever Erik Hoffberg worked two and one-third shutout innings in relief before running into trouble in the seventh. After a leadoff triple and an RBI single, Davis loaded the bases with nobody out as Gonzaga turned to Ryan Hernandez, who picked up a strikeout and induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the Aggie threat.

Despite putting a runner on in six of the final seven innings, the Zags could not string hits together on Sunday. UC Davis turned to Carter Delaney for the second straight game to close it out, who needed just seven pitches to turn away the Bulldogs in the ninth.

Rece Schuerman collected two more hits on Sunday, concluding his first weekend behind the dish batting 5-for-10 and throwing out two UC Davis runners on the basepaths. Shupe tallied a 5-for-13 weekend after a 1-for-4 game on Sunday.
