SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga University (4-7-0, 2-1-0) secured a 2-0 victory over the University of San Francisco (1-6-3, 0-2-1) at Luger Field, aided by a shutout performance from their goalkeeper.
Gonzaga opened the first half with a quick offensive push, culminating in a goal by
Emily Todd in the fourth minute, assisted by
Amelia Severn, giving the home team an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs maintained pressure throughout, recording multiple shots, including efforts from
Katelyn Rigg and
Lauren Chin, though San Francisco's goalkeeper, Tyra Bengtsson-Stenseth, managed several saves to keep the deficit from widening.
Despite persistent attempts, including corner kicks and shots from various players, the Zags were unable to extend their lead further. Defensively, the team held strong, with
Michaela McCollum making a crucial save against San Francisco's Lindsey Chau late in the half. The first half concluded with the Bulldogs leading 1-0, holding the advantage into the break.
The second half began with Gonzaga applying pressure, resulting in multiple shot attempts. Severn capitalized on this momentum, scoring in the 68th minute to extend GU's lead to 2-0.
San Francisco attempted to respond but was repeatedly halted by Gonzaga's defense, including a key save by McCollum in the 86th minute. The half concluded with the Zags maintaining their advantage, closing out the game with a 2-0 victory.
Severn contributed significantly with one goal and one assist, finishing with three total points. Rigg led the team in shooting efforts, recording seven shots and putting two on goal. Todd scored the game-winning goal, marking her first goal of the season and helping secure the victory. McCollum played a key role defensively, posting two saves and maintaining a shutout across 90 minutes in goal.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play following the victory. San Francisco fell to 1-6-3 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play after the loss.
