Lee Finishes Fifth at WCC Championships

Zags place third as team; Kim tied for sixth
BREMERTON, Wash. – Gonzaga's Grace Lee placed fifth at the 2023 West Coast Conference Championships Saturday, while the Zags came in third as a team at Gold Mountain Golf Course.
Lee had her best round of the tournament on the third day, carding a 71 (-1) in the final round. She rose two spots on the leaderboard with four birdies and 11 pars in Round 3. It was the freshman's first Top-5 finish of the season, and second in the Top-10. Lee's 37 pars in the tournament were the fourth-most in the 25-golfer field. She had back-to-back rounds of 73 (+1) in the first and second rounds. The Bellevue, Wash., native, finished one-over in the tournament with a 217 total.
Cassie Kim was right behind at two-over (218) in a tie for sixth place. The senior also had her best round on Day 3 at two-under (70). She climbed seven spots on the leaderboard with five birdies in the third round, all on the front-nine. The Yakima, Wash., native, had 13 birdies in the event, the third-most in the field. She was also four-under (4.67) on the course's Par-5 holes, which was the second-best average in the tournament. Kim finished at two-over (74) on Thursday and Friday.
Chaewon Baek tied for 10th place at four-over (220). She moved up three spots on the leaderboard Saturday with an even-par (72) round. The sophomore made three birdies and 12 pars on Day 3. She finished at 75 (+3) and 73 (+1) in the first and second rounds.
As a team, GU moved from fourth to third on the final day after a 286 (-2) team total. It was the Bulldogs' second-lowest team round of the season, and the fourth-lowest score in the tournament this weekend. Gonzaga was 20-over (4.13) on the course's Par-4 holes, which was the second-best team average in the event.
Quynn Duong (+8, 224) and Alyssa Nguyen (+11,227) finished in 17th and 21st place. Duong was one-over (73) in the final round and Nguyen had her best round on the first day at two-over (74).
Pepperdine cruised to the team title, sweeping the top three spots on the leaderboard. The No. 17 Waves were 12-under (852) in the championships, totaling a tournament-low 279 (-9) Saturday. BYU was second at five-over (869).
Kaleiya Romero took medalist honors for Pepperdine, beating out teammate Lion Higo by one stroke 209 (-7) to 210 (-6). Higo broke the course record Friday carding a 64 (-8), but Romero's 67 (-5) clinched her the title on the final day. The Waves' Reese Guzman was third at three-under (213).
