TICKETS PUNCHED AT THE WEST REGIONAL
The Bulldog men earned their second-consecutive automatic qualifying bid after upsetting three ranked teams in Sacramento's West Regional on Friday. Heading into the day, GU was ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA West Region rankings behind No. 4 Cal Baptist, No. 10 Stanford, No. 22 Washington, No. 26 Oregon, and RV Boise State. After a 98-point performance, Gonzaga placed second only to Stanford (73 team points), while knocking off the remaining four aforementioned teams to earn the second automatic bid out of the West Region.
Machu paced the Zag women to a fifth place team finish after finishing fourth on the individual leaderboard. Her 19:15.7 6K time marked a new program record and the third time Machu has broken that record this season. The Stanford women earned the sweep after winning the team title in both races, despite not having a runner place in the top five. Despite a high finish on Friday, the Gonzaga women were not granted an at-large bid to Charlottesville due to low finishes by certain teams that affected their chances. Machu will be the first GU women's individual in the NCAA Championships since Kristen Garcia, who raced in 2021 for a 90th place finish.
NOT THEIR FIRST RODEO
Head Coach Pat Tyson's men's squad will make their fourth-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships after earning their second-straight automatic qualifying bid. In the Covid-shortened 2020-21 season and their first-ever team appearance, the Zag men placed 27th at the event in Stillwater, Okla. behind a 55th-place finish from Yacine Guermali. That same fall in the 2021 season, James Mwaura was the lead runner in a 26th-place team finish when he earned All-American status, placing 36th individually. GU's highest finish came just a year ago back in Stillwater when they placed 13th. Guermali just missed an All-American nod, placing 41st overall as the Zags' top finisher.
