
Gonzaga Men’s Cross Country Selected to First-Ever Nationals

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's cross country will run in the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. The Zags learned their fate during the NCAA Selection Show Sunday. GU's Kristen Garcia will represent the Bulldog women as an individual.
The 2021 NCAA Championships is hosted by Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. Coverage begins at 9:30 a.m. Pacific, and ESPNU will broadcast the event live. Live results will be available on GoZags.com.
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process.
The Bulldogs placed second at the 2021 West Coast Conference Championships on Feb. 24. The second-place team finish matched the best finish in program history. It was the first time GU has placed in the top two since 2004.
Gonzaga's James Mwaura finished second as an individual in an 8K program-record finish of 23:02.9. Yacine Guermali ran the second-fastest time in school history at 23:07.5, placing fourth. Freshman Wil Smith was 11th at 23:46.7, which ranks fifth on the GU all-time list.
Gonzaga Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Pat Tyson was named the WCC Men's Coach of the Year following the race. Mwaura and Guermali earned All-Conference honors with their finishes, while Smith was tabbed Second Team All-WCC. Peter Hogan finished just outside of All-WCC Second Team honors, placing 16th at 23:54.3. It was a personal record for him, and another Top-10 program best time.
The Zags are ranked 14th nationally and fourth in the West Region, and both are program records.
Garcia crossed the line in 12th at the WCC Championships, with a time of 20:50.2 is the 8th-fastest 6K finish in program history. She was named Second Team All-WCC with her finish.
Teams and individual student-athletes selected for the Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships can invite some guests to watch them compete March 15 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Teams will have a travel party size of 12 people and can invite a total of 24 guests, while individuals who qualify for the championships will have a travel party size of three people and can invite a total of six guests. There will be no public ticket sales for the event.
The women's race will begin at 9:50 a.m. Pacific Time, followed by the men's race at 10:40 a.m. Pacific Time.
