Program-best finish; Garcia runs fastest 6K in program history
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gonzaga women's cross country earned its highest team finish in program history at the NCAA West Regional Championships Friday morning, placing fourth overall thanks to a third-place finish and 6K program record from Kristen Garcia and all seven Zag runners cracking the top 100 finishers.
Garcia's 20:03.2 time topped Shelby Mills' 2014 WCC Championship race for the fastest 6K by a Zag runner in program history, punching her ticket to nationals as an individual while finishing just behind individual winner Julia Heymach (20:01.1) of Stanford and Ruby Smee (20:01.6) of San Francisco.
Elisabeth Danis was up next at 27th with the seventh-fastest 6K in program history at 20:35.5, followed by Alicia Anderson (35th, 20:45.6), Sadie Tuckwood (39th, 20:47.9), Rosina Machu (44th, 20:51.2), Brittney Hansen (92nd, 21:41.3) and Liz Hogan (99th, 21:46.3) to keep all of GU's finishers in the top 100 with 51 seconds between the top five.
The Zags now await the NCAA Selection Show to find out whether they will earn their first bid since 2015 to compete as a team at Nationals in Tallahassee, Fla. next week. The Selection Show is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
