Tyson announces signing of duo
SPOKANE, Wash. – Director of Gonzaga Cross Country and Track and Field Pat Tyson announced the signing of Aidan Baughan and Jeremiah Mackie Monday.
Aidan Baughan
Las Vegas, Nev.| Faith Lutheran High School
Aidan Baughan ran cross country and track for Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas. Throughout high school, he has shown improvement every year, dropping multiple minutes off of his 5k and 3,200-meter times. As a junior, Baughan qualified individually for the NIAA 4A cross country state meet, where he placed 11th. That year, in the spring, he qualified for the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters at the NIAA 4A track state championships. He placed third in the 1,600 meters running a 4:28, and second in the 3,200 meters at 9:44. As a senior, Baughan finished first at the NIAA 4A Mountain Region meet, and went on to finish fifth at the NIAA 4A state championships.
"I chose Gonzaga, because I wanted to be a part of a great team atmosphere," Baughan said. "I also think Gonzaga is going to be a great academic fit for me, because I went to a private high school. I love the smaller class room atmosphere."
"What I like about Aidan is that he is undertrained, under raced, and has a boat load of potential," Tyson said. "He is a young man who will progress and really help the Zags. Aidan is competitive and is a team guy! Add to the fact he is a great student. He too will thrive as a student athlete in the Land of Gonzaga."
Jeremiah Mackie
Surrey, B.C.| Earl Marriott Secondary School
Mackie will join the Bulldogs after a stellar career at Earl Marriott Secondary School in Surrey, B.C. Jeremiah's brother, Jaxon, was a redshirt freshman on the GU roster last year. Jeremiah placed 12th at the Canadian Cross Country National Championships, after finishing third at the British Columbia Cross Country Provincials.
"I chose Gonzaga for the amazing athletic and academic opportunities that it has to offer," Mackie said. "Running at the Div. 1 level has always been a dream of mine and I know Gonzaga is the perfect fit for me. I am also excited to run alongside my brother as a fellow Zag."
"Jeremiah Mackie will develop into a very good Div. 1 distance runner," Tyson said. "He has great range from 1500 on up! We could see him steeplechasing in the spring! He loves to work and is a great team guy! He cares about his academics and will be a great fit for the Zags!"
