LAS VEGAS – Gonzaga sophomore Federica Torre led the way for the women's golf team through 36 holes at the Rebel Beach Invitational on Monday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Playing the Par-72 Spanish Trail Country Club, Torre fired an opening round 71 (-1) and then followed up with a one-over 73 to sit in a tie for seventh place heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
As a team, Gonzaga played its way to a tie for ninth after two rounds. The Zags were 12 strokes better in the second round to start their climb up the leaderboard.
"We struggled to find our groove in the first nine holes of the year, but after we settled in, we played well for the next 27 holes," head coach Brad Rickel said. "If we can continue our momentum tomorrow we could move way up the leaderboard."
Torre's opening 18 holes featured two birdies an eagle at the par-5 18th, followed by solid 73 in the second with a pair of birdies.
Sophomore Quynn Duong was one of the Zags that bounced back well in the second round. After opening with a 77 (+5), she shot a 70 (-2) in the second round with five birdies.
Freshman Cassie Kim opened the day with a three-over 75 before shooting a four-over 76 to complete a solid day on the course.
Jessica Mangrobang was 10 strokes better in her second round shooting a one-over 73 in the latter 18 holes. Her second round featured just one bogey and 17 pars.
Gonzaga will tee off at 8 a.m. in a shotgun start on Tuesday for the final 18 holes at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas. Check GoZags.com for links to live scoring on GolfStat.
