Gonzaga starts season in first place fashion

CHENEY, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's and men's cross country programs opened their seasons with first place finishes at the annual Clash of the Inland Northwest, hosted by Eastern Washington University Saturday.

The Zag women placed three runners inside the Top-10, while the GU men swept the top three spots and had six Top-10 finishers. GU's Cullen McEachern won the men's race, finishing the 6,000-meter course at 18:00.5.

The Bulldog men took the team title at the event for the fourth straight year. Gonzaga's Phillip Fishburn was second at 18:00.8, while Luke Mason was third (18:01.2). Andrew Clusserath (18:02.6) and Dominic Arce (18:03.1) were sixth and seventh. Ben Hogan placed ninth at 18:03.5.

Emily Phelps led the Zag women with fifth place at 14:31.4. Brittney Hansen was sixth (14:32.4) and Paxton Depoe was eighth (14:37.5). Grace Fahrney placed 11^th with a time of 14:45.0. Montana's Beatrix Frissell won the 4K race at 14:13.7.

Gonzaga runs at the Cougar Classic Friday in Colfax, Wash. The Bulldogs will have an opportunity to run on the same course that will host the NCAA West Regionals. Friday's women's 6K race begins at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 5:45.
