Zags in 17th place at 11-over
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Gonzaga's Tyler Munetake is two-under (142) after the first two rounds of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on the Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
Munetake opened the tournament with an even-par (72) round, before carding a 70 (-2) in the second round. He made 12 pars in both rounds, along with three birdies in Round 1 and four birdies in Round 2. The senior's 2.63 (-3) average on the course's Par-3 holes led the 119-golfer field. He is in a tie for 26th at two-under (142).
"Tyler has been our most consistent team member with five consecutive tournament rounds at even par or better" Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Once again he has himself in position for a solid finish this week."
The Zags are in 17th place as a team at 11-over (587). GU had a 293 (+5) team total in the first round and 294 (+6) in the second round.
Nick Nolan and Chris Mogg are four-over (148) and five-over (149). Nolan was one-under in the second round with 13 pars and three birdies, while Mogg was one of 10 golfers to eagle a hole on Day 1. Nolan is tied for 71st, while Mogg is tied for 76th.
"Nick bounced back from his opening round to post our only other round under par today," Gray said. "His and Tyler's second round were huge in giving us a chance to move up the leaderboard a number of spots tomorrow."
Grant Johnson and Matthew Ruel were both two-over (74) in Round 1. Johnson is seven-over (151) entering the third and final round, while Ruel is eight-over (152).
"As a team we continue to struggle with consistency from man to man and make too many big scores on holes," Gray said. "Those big numbers have plagued us all year and kept us from good finishes. In addition, when we do hit good shots into the greens, we haven't made enough of the putts.
"On the other hand, I'm happy with how the guys hung in there today. They kept fighting even after making those bigger numbers and the frustration of missed putts."
UCLA tops the team leaderboard at 18-under (558). The Bruins have a two-stroke lead over Cal State Fullerton after two rounds. Grand Canyon is in third at 14-under (562), following a 17-under (271) second round finish as a team.
Wyoming's John Murdock and UCLA's Cole Madey are tied for first at eight-under (136). Both golfers were three-under (69) in Round 1, and five-under (67) in Round 2.
Tuesday's third round begins at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
