
Mwaura Shatters 10K Program Record

Gardner runs second-fastest steeplechase time in GU history
STANFORD, Calif. — Gonzaga's James Mwaura cruised to the 10,000-meter title at the Cardinal Classic Saturday night.
Mwaura shattered the program record with a time of 29:15.75. The freshman crossed the line in first place ahead of Washington's Gavin Parpart in second at 29:17.39. The Zags' previous program record was set earlier this season by Peter Hogan at 29:37.53 at the San Francisco Distance Carnival. Mwaura's time ranks 29th in the West Region.
Phillip Fishburn's fourth place time of 30:09.34 ranks seventh in program history. Jake Perrin (30:17.09) and William Thompson (30:43.75) were sixth and seventh in the event.
Andrew Gardner won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase title with a time of 8:46.16. His time ranks second on the Gonzaga all-time list. Troy Fraley owns the program record at 8:45.14. Gardner's time ranks 10th currently in the region.
Saturday, Kellen Manley ran a personal record of 8:57.03, which ranks third all-time in program history and 25th in the West Region. Sammy Truax (9:08.97) and Alex Walde (9:11.38) rose up the program's all-time list to eighth and ninth in GU history.
Aimee Piercy improved the program's third-fastest women's 3,000-meter steeplechase time in program history. She crossed the line at 10:51.03, her previous personal best was 10:55.36. She placed 14th in the event.
Scott Kopczynski climbed to No. 8 on the GU all-time list in the men's 1,500 meters. He was 10th in his heat at 3:51.17, besting his previous personal record of 3:52.62, which ranked 10th in program history. Mason Villarma was second in the third section with a time of 3:50.53, followed closely by Brandon Pollard in third at 3:51.38. Andrew Clusserath was fifth at 3:52.48. Graham Wendle came in fourth place in his section, crossing the line at 3:58.09.
In the women's 1,500 meters, Ally Legard placed third in her heat at 4:38.97. Jordan McPhee was sixth with a time of 4:41.87, while Claire Gillett was eighth at 4:51.13.
The Gonzaga women head to the OSU High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Ore., Friday, before a group of Bulldog men represent GU in the Penn Relays next Saturday.
