New Top-10 marks set inside Kibbie Dome
MOSCOW, Idaho — Gonzaga's Jordan McPhee ran the third-fastest women's 800-meter time in program history at the D1 Invitational Team Challenge hosted by the University of Idaho inside the Kibbie Dome Friday.
McPhee placed fourth in the event with a time of 2:18.73. Morgan Greene's (2:20.50) and Ally Legard's (2:20.72) finishes now rank seventh and ninth all-time at GU. They placed eighth and ninth Friday.
Monica Ripple came in fourth in the women's 3,000 meters. The senior crossed the line at 10:30.23.
The quartet of Brianna Vasquez, Claire Gillett, Emma Flood and Greene placed third in the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:19.28.
"Another really quality day for our program," Bulldogs' women's Head Coach Jake Stewart said. "We had a lot of athletes competing in different events and they performed confidently. It's really been a lot of fun being around this team right now with the energy they have. All-in-all, we had 16 seasonal or life time bests today! Jordan McPhee, Morgan Greene and Ally Legard all earned spots on the All Time Top 10 list for our program in the 800. Our entire group of milers really competed well. Our 800 athletes were aggressive and had nice breakthroughs, and Monica Ripple went to the front of the 3k and competed for the win, just awesome to watch. The program has momentum. We'll look to continue that in Boise next week to end our indoor season."
The Zags' Mason Villarma moved up on the men's 800-meter all-time list. His 1:56.15 fourth-place finish ranks as the eighth-fastest time in program history.
Four Zags placed in the top five of the men's mile. Graham Wendle was second at 4:14.54, while Peter Hogan was third at 4:15.91. Kyle Thompson (4:16.16) and Kellen Manley (4:17.15) were fourth and fifth. Ben Hogan placed sixth with a time of 4:18.74. Eastern Washington's Isaac Barville was first at 4:10.73.
"It was a nice opening for the Zag distance runners," Director of GU Track and Field Pat Tyson said. "After getting up early and driving two hours by bus down to Moscow, the Zag milers put on a respectful performance! Sammy Truax won the first heat in a controlled 4:22.56. Heat 2 showcased a second through fourth finish with Graham Wendle, Peter Hogan, Kyle Thompson, and Kellen Manley. Ben Hogan was close behind. Every one of these Gonzaga runners had indoor personal bests!"
In the men's 3,000 meters, David Connell (8:42.38) beat out teammate Dominic Arce (8:42.89) for third place. Ciaran O'Leary placed eighth at 8:48.48, and Phillip Fishburn was 10th at 8:50.92.
"I like what I saw from the guys," Tyson said. "Hopefully it's a nice spring board for things to happen as we get ready for outdoors next month! We still have a high-end meet next weekend. We're hoping to run six men at the Husky Classic next week and then shut down the indoor season."
The GU men will compete at the Husky Classic next Friday and Saturday, while the Zag women head to the Bronco Challenge Saturday in Boise, Idaho.
