Zags were five-over as a team on Day 1 in Hawaii
LAHAINA, Hawaii – The Gonzaga men's golf team is in 17th place after Round 1 of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
The Zags were five-over as a team, with a 289-team total. The sixth annual event has returned to the Royal Ka'anapali Course.
"We just needed to be better into the wind and take better advantage of the Par-5's," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We started out alright, but really struggled on holes 13 to 16 into the wind where we were eight-over par and carded four bogeys on simple Par-5's. Outside of that, we played decent and did a good job of bouncing back, playing our final six holes in six-under par. Two more rounds to go to put together rounds that better represent us as a team."
The Bulldogs' Charlie Magruder is tied for 33rd. He carded a 69 (-2) in the first round, making five birdies and 10 pars. Matthew Ruel was one-over (72), with three birdies and 11 pars. He is tied for 69th.
Grant Johnson also made five birdies in Round 1 for GU. The sophomore is tied for 80th at two-over (73). Brentt Salas (T99) and Zach Stocker (T111) are four-over (75) and seven-over (78).
No. 5 Oklahoma and Kansas are tied for first after the first day at 16-under (268). No. 23 UCLA is a stroke back at 15-under (269).
Oklahoma's Garett Reband and Andy Spencer of Kansas are tied atop the leaderboard at seven-under (64). Five golfers are tied for third at six-under.
The second round of the tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time Saturday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com. The third and final round is Sunday.
