Duong in first at -6, team shot record -10 (278) in 2nd Round
TACOMA, Wash. – Gonzaga women's golf posted 21 birdies in the second round on the way to a school record 10-under second round at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma, Wash., on Monday. GU leads the team race by 19 shots through 36 holes.
Playing the Par-72 Tacoma Golf and Country Club, GU got out to a two-shot lead in the opening round of the 36-hole day with a two-over 290, but the second round was a different story. The Zags broke the school's 18-hole and 36-hole school records in both total score and score-to-par with a 10-under 278.
"We are super proud of our team today, it was so fun to see five players all completely invested and fully committed," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Quynn [Duong] was solid from the start and just played steady all day. Jessica [Mangrobang] had a tough first four holes and then turned it completely around. Our Freshman Cassie [Kim] and Alyssa [Nguyen] continue to be impressive. They are steady and showing we can count on them every day to work hard. And Federica [Torre] had a very tough start in her first round, but she reset and had a great 70 in the afternoon. It is pretty special to shoot 10-under in the second round of a 36-hole day."
Sophomore Quynn Duong had a fantastic day posting back-to-back three-under 69s to take the outright lead by three shots on the field. In the first round, she notched five birdies, followed by four more in the second round. Duong's six-under 138 total is the third-best in program history in both score-to-par and total score.
Senior Jessica Mangrobang posted the best 18-hole score of the day for Gonzaga, going bogey-free in the second round to shoot a four-under 68. Along with her opening-round 74, Mangrobang sits in a tie for third overall.
Freshman Cassie Kim was steady throughout the day as well, posting a one-over 73 in the first round and a one-under 71 in the second round with four birdies.
Freshman Alyssa Nguyen factored in the team score in the opening round with a 74 (+2), and Federica Torre battled back with a solid second round of 70 (-2).
Gonzaga will play the final round of the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invite in Tacoma on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Links to live scoring on BirdieFire can be found at GoZags.com.
