CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Nick Nolan led the Gonzaga men's golf team with an 11th place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic Tuesday. The Zags placed eighth as a team at five-under (859) on the Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
Nolan finished the tournament at four-under (212). He carded a 70 (-2) in the third and final round. The sophomore was one-under on the front-nine and back-nine. He made three birdies and 14 pars. Nolan made a team-high 13 pars in the tournament. He went five-under (4.58) on the course's Par-5 holes and one-under (2.92) on the Par-3 holes.
"Nick put together three solid rounds this week, never shooting over par," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "He did a great job on the par 3's (-1) and par 5's (-5), leading the team in both categories."
David Ganz was also two-under (70) in Round 3. He went two-under on the front-nine and even-par on the back-nine. The Portland, Ore. native made four birdies and 12 pars Tuesday. He tied for 27th at even-par (216).
"David fought back after his first round," Gray said. "I followed him the last two rounds and he struck the ball very well. If his putter had been cooperating, he would've easily had two mid 60's rounds."
Gonzaga went one-over (289) as a team in the final round. The Zags started the day in a tie for sixth place.
"It wasn't our best day but we hung in there and finished up the day strong," Gray said. "We struck the ball pretty well overall today but we weren't able to get enough putts to fall in order to improve or maintain our position. While we dropped a couple of spots in the field, we counted everyone's score at least twice and never took a high fourth score. This could've definitely been a top-five finish for us this week with only five shots between us and fourth."
Holden Backes tied for 51st at four-over (220). He was three-over (75) in the third round. Ben DuBois was seven-over (79) in Round 3, while Tyler Munetake was two-over (74). DuBois made 12 of his team-high 38 pars Tuesday. He finished seven-over (223). Munetake had a three-day total of 225 (+9).
"For Holden, he had a very respectable showing for his first time in the lineup," Gray said. "I was impressed with how he handled himself during some frustrating situations."
Sean Meehan led Texas-San Antonio to the team title. He took medalist honors at 11-under (205). Meehan edged out McNeese State's Blake Elliott by a stroke for the win. Elliott was three-under (69) in the final round, while Meehan was four-under (68).
Texas-San Antonio was 22-under (842). The Roadrunners were six-under (282) in the third round. Sam Houston State was second at 18-under (846). Wyoming came in third at 17-under (847).
Gonzaga travels to Santee, Calif., for the West Coast Conference Championships. The three-day, 54-hole event begins Monday at the Carlton Oaks Golf Club. Live results will be available on GoZags.com.
