"That was a great match top to bottom," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "It's nice to see our hard work pay off. We really focused on playing in the present, and I thought everyone did that really well today. It's nice to see where we are in the conference, but we've got tough matches ahead. We've got to focus on USF and Santa Clara next weekend."
In doubles, Gonzaga dominated on No. 2, but the Toreros got off to a hot start on Nos. 1 and 3 before the Zags rebounded to take the point. GU's Court 2 pair of Haruna Tsuruta and Alex Bourguignon cruised to a 6-1 win. USD was up 3-1 on both the remaining two courts but break points put GU back in the match in each. After the Toreros won on No. 3 6-4, GU's top pair, ranked No. 42 in the nation, of Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas won five of the last six games to take a 6-4 win and clinch the point.
In singles, Nevada Apollo collected the first win of the day in dominating fashion to give the Zags a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win on No. 2. Whittle followed shortly after on No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory to put the Zags on the brink of clinching the match.
Domonique Garley then clinched the match for the Zags with her straight-set win on No. 4, 6-0, 6-2.
GU's Rosas led by a set on No. 3 when her match went unfinished, and Kate Ketels was also up a set on No. 6 when her match was stopped after GU clinched.
Gonzaga will be back on the road next weekend with back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday in the Bay Area. GU will face San Francisco on Friday at Noon, followed by Santa Clara on Saturday at 10 a.m.
