LAHAINA, Hawaii – The Gonzaga men's golf team is in 12th place after the second round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic. The Zags' Matthew Ruel is tied for 16th entering Sunday's final round.
After carding a 68 (-3) in the first round, Ruel was two-under (69) in Round 2. He is five-under (137) following the first two rounds. The Oldsmar, Fla., native made four birdies and eagled Hole 9. He is three-under on the course's Par-4 holes (3.86) after two rounds. Ruel has a team-high 10 birdies.
Chris Mogg is tied for 39th at even-par (142). He was two-over (73) in the second round. The junior made four birdies and nine pars Saturday. Charlie Magruder made three birdies and 13 pars in Round 2. He is tied for 48th at one-over (143), after carding a 70 (-1) on Day 2. The sophomore is five-under on the course's Par-5 holes (4.17).
Grant Johnson (T97) and Holden Backes (T110) are eight-over (150) and 13-over (155). Johnson was seven-over (78) in the second round, while Backes was five-over (76).
The Zags are two-over (570) as a team. GU was four-over (288) in Round 2.
"Another gritty performance by the team today," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Wind blew much harder and we got off to a slow start, but they hung in there and fought their way back. Matt backed up his round of 68 yesterday with 69, and Charlie gave us another round under-par with his 70. Holden fought back well after a tough start and Chris battled well all day, showing a lot of grit by managing some tough moments.
"One more round tomorrow where we'll try to head into the off-season with our best team score of the season."
California tops the team leaderboard at 27-under (541). The No. 26 Golden Bears have a three-stroke lead on No. 27 North Florida. UNF's Andrew Alligood has a one-stroke lead on the field at 10-under (132). Four golfers are tied for second at nine-under.
The third and final round begins with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Pacific Time Sunday. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
