Zags finish in 10th place as a team
MADERA, Calif. – Gonzaga men's golfer Chris Mogg made 15 pars in his final round at the Nick Watney Invitational and finished tied for 25th Tuesday.
Mogg was one-over (73) in the third and final round at the Dragonfly Golf Club. He finished the tournament at one-over (225). The junior was one-over on the course's Par-3 holes (3.08), and totaled 12 birdies in the three round, 54-hole event.
Freshman Grant Johnson carded a 69 (-3) in the third round, matching the lowest round of the season for the team. He had 12 pars and three birdies in Round 3. After eagling the sixth hole in the first round Monday, the Walnut Creek, Calif. native did it again in the final round Tuesday. He was one of only four golfers to record at least two eagles in the tournament. Johnson tied for 37th at four-over (220).
Nick Nolan (+11, 227) and Charlie Magruder (+12, 228) tied for 56th and 58th. After rough starts in Round 3, both Nolan and Magruder went one-under on the course's front-nine holes. Magruder was four-over (76) Monday, while Nolan was six-over (78). Magruder's 38 pars in the tournament were the sixth-most in the 69-golfer field. Matthew Ruel tied for 63rd at 15-over, after an 11-over (83) final round.
The Zags were 20-over (884) and placed 10th. GU had a 296 (+8) team total in Round 3.
"Weather conditions were ideal today after a short delay," Bulldogs' Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Grant put together a solid round, our lowest of the day. For his college first event, he did pretty well. Chris was solid from tee to green, hitting 16 greens. He just didn't make many putts. Charlie did a great job fighting back after a rough start where he was six-over after his first six holes.
"Definitely not the result we were looking for this week. We're really struggling with consistency throughout the lineup through two events. With such a different and younger squad from last year, we're still trying to see who will become a team member who we can count on for that consistency."
Nevada held off a BYU rally for the team title. The Wolf Pack had an 11-stroke lead entering the final round, but after a 16-under (272) Round 3 finish by BYU, Nevada won by only one stroke. The Wolf Pack were 30-under (834) in the tournament.
Joey Vrzich of Nevada took medalist honors at 14-under (202). He was two-under (70) in the final round. BYU's Carson Lundell was second at 12-under (204).
Gonzaga is at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif., on Oct. 15-16. The tournament is hosted by Cal State Northridge at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.
